San Francisco had a thriving port until the huge container ships started to dock across the Bay in Oakland. But even when the commercial nautical activity diminished, the aura of the waterfront remained -- the sparkling, broken light; the smell of salt and creosote; the vague promise of adventure. Perhaps this is why the Embarcadero has now become a setting for restaurants and picturesque office space. | ||
