An American To Discover

Alan May is a 53-year-old American artist who lives in San Francisco . He is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz and the Art Center of Los Angeles. He teaches etching and monotype in San Francisco and abroad while pursuing his painting career.

Since 1988, May's exhibits have enjoyed resounding success. Many of his works have received awards, and some have been acquired for private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe, Peru, and Japan . He is visiting France this fall and exhibiting some of his works, this weekend only, from 11 AM to 7 PM , at La Cave du Mas de la Griveliere, 123, route de Meylan, in Biviers. Don't miss this brief chance to view some art that many of you will fall in love with, and for which some of you will fall hard.

As one enters the exhibit space, a former wine cellar, the eyes are instantly drawn to the luminous patches of colour in May's works. Drawing closer, one is struck by a sense of dichotomy—the contrast between the artist's rigorously mastered monotype technique, and the lightness, transparency, and spirit that ultimately make the stronger impression. The affinities with Japanese woodcuts are very close, right down to the red cartouche in the lower right-hand corner of each piece. But here, colours are everything -- nuances of colours, transparency of colours, marriage of colours. As you will now have guessed, Alan May's monotypes may be made of nothing more than paper and ink, but they reveal an immense talent. A show not to be missed.
